Many of Koh Tao’s beaches also offer excellent snorkelling, making it easy to explore marine life without needing to dive.

1. Sairee Beach
Sairee Beach is the most popular beach in Koh Tao and the centre of island life. It stretches along the west coast and offers plenty of restaurants, bars and accommodation options.
It’s also one of the best places to watch the sunset.
2. Freedom Beach
Freedom Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Koh Tao, known for its soft sand and clear water. It’s a quieter spot compared to Sairee and ideal for relaxing or snorkelling.
3. Shark Bay
Shark Bay is famous for its marine life, including blacktip reef sharks and turtles, which are often seen in the shallow waters close to shore.
The beach itself is peaceful and less crowded than the main areas.
4. Tanote Bay
Tanote Bay is a scenic beach on the east side of the island, known for its large granite boulders, clear water and excellent snorkelling. It’s also known for the large rock just offshore where visitors sometimes jump into the sea.

Note: During certain times of the year, triggerfish in Tanote Bay can become territorial when guarding their nests. They typically defend an upward cone-shaped area above the nest.
If approached, it’s best to calmly swim away horizontally rather than heading straight to the surface. If you’re wearing fins, gentle kicks can help create distance. While encounters are rare, triggerfish can bite if they feel threatened.
5. Ao Leuk Beach
Ao Leuk is a beautiful bay with calm water and excellent visibility, making it ideal for swimming and snorkelling.
It’s often considered one of the most picturesque beaches on the island.
6. Sai Nuan Beach

Mango Bay is a sheltered bay on the north side of Koh Tao, known for its calm, shallow water and abundant marine life. It’s a great spot for snorkelling, with plenty of fish and coral close to shore.
The bay is also commonly used for Open Water training dives due to its shallow depth and sandy bottom areas, making it ideal for building confidence underwater.
It’s also a popular location for beginner scuba experiences (often called Try Scuba Diving or Discover Scuba Diving), giving first-time divers a safe and relaxed introduction to the underwater world.
8. Hin Wong Bay
Hin Wong Bay is one of Koh Tao’s hidden gems and a great spot for snorkelling. The bay is known for its clear water and large schools of fish close to shore.
At certain times of the year, snorkellers may even spot juvenile blacktip reef sharks near the beach, similar to Ao Leuk and Shark Bay.
It’s a quieter location compared to the main beaches, making it ideal if you want to avoid crowds.
